Welcome back to ‘In My Ears’, it’s not about earworms, wax and whatever else you may find in your ears (I don’t know your life), but about 5 tracks that I’ve loved throughout the month. Catch March’s edition here, and keep on reading for the 5 songs I’ve fawned over this month.
Billie Eilish – bad guy
Everyone on the bloody planet has been obsessed with Billie Eilish’ debut album, and for good reason. I gave it a damn fucking good review because it’s one of the best debut albums in recent times, maybe ever. ‘bad guy’ is an eclectic villainous track I can just envisage being played over a montage of the antagonists pulling some shit in a Netflix original. It’s a song that has a beautifully unconventional aesthetic, in it’s attempt to be unappealing, it’s become on of the most popular songs in the world.
Lizzo – Like A Girl
Lizzo’s newest album dropped this month and it’s absolutely amazing. Lizzo is one of those magnetic people, she could do anything and I’d be totally down for it. She’s such a breath of fresh air in pop and she’s dropping hit after hit. Like A Girl is a celebration of black femininity and name drops some badass women in the world. ‘Like A Girl’ is catchy beyond belief and deserves all the recognition in the world. It’s a massive pop banger with real heart behind it.
Circa Waves – Somebody Good
April has been a massive month for albums, Circa Waves dropped their latest one too. I’m bias because they’re Scouse too, but that doesn’t change the fact this album is full of amazing indie rock bangers. ‘Somebody Good’ is a depressingly relatable festival banger that will be roared up and down the country this summer. The whole album is amazing, but ‘Somebody Good’ is a standout and it’s an absolute earworm. The massive breakdown into a slow, dark chorus then exploding back into the huge banger it is, the track is as close to perfect as possible. One of my favourite songs in a long time.
Marina – To Be Human
Marina continues to earn her spot in these posts, as she just keeps dropping tracks after a lengthy hiatus. Marina boldly dropped the first half of her double album LOVE + FEAR a few weeks ahead of its scheduled release date. As a diehard Marina fan, I can say it’s not her best album to date, but it’s still a massively enjoyable and interesting pop album. However, ‘To Be Human’ earns its rightful place as one of her best tracks of all time. It’s slow and sultry, it’ll take you on a journey around the world, and it came alongside a really beautiful video showcasing the best and worst of humanity. Marina is an artist that sees the world completely different to the rest of us mere mortals, and to see the world through her lens is an absolute privilege.
As of writing this, we’re a few days from the second part of her album dropping and I can’t bloody wait, I’m sure you’ll see some tracks from that in the next edition.
Vampire Weekend – This Life
Vampire Weekend are a band I can admit I’ve slept on. I’ve always known I’d love them but just never got around to listening to much of their stuff. ‘This Life’ sold me immediately , the opening lyrics ‘Baby, I know pain is as natural as the rain, I just thought it didn’t rain in California’ instantly became some of my favourite lyrics. It’s a simple song, fullof upbeat riffs, soft vocals and amazing backing from Danielle Haim. Amazing track.
